In this episode, I speak with Vanessa about how she got started as an influencer, what it is like working with a management team, and her future career plans. Tap into her story, as well as her advice below.

1. Be persistent and good things will happen.

Believe it or not, Vanessa has been posting fashion content since she was 12 years old. Fast forward many years later and her popularity continued to soar. She started making fashion based Reels when short-form video content was just getting started on Instagram. The market was not too saturated at the time and this put Vanessa at a great advantage.

Then, everything started to snowball immensely during the quarantine. As many others were getting in touch with their creative flow, so was Vanessa and she quickly blew up on TikTok.

2. It pays to be well-rounded.

Her growth on TikTok happened to be just repurposed Instagram Reels content. Vanessa always encourages others to not be afraid to reuse videos in order to monopolize other platforms. She’s even found tremendous success on YouTube by repurposing her videos onto YouTube Shorts and has amassed 755k+ followers from that alone.

3. Consider a management team.

In an industry that is fairly new and talking numbers is not the norm, she struggled to understand what her content was really worth. Now, Vanessa is so grateful for her current management team. When she was working solo, she struggled with negotiation and was often lowballed in brand deals but she now has the support to take this load off her plate.

4. Don’t take lowball offers personally.

Jumping off the previous point, Vanessa relayed that it is important to not take lowball offers personally. At the end of the day, it is the job of the marketing or PR rep to try and reduce budget and cost on behalf of the company.

5. Practice makes perfect.

The one thing about Vanessa’s content is that it is always consistent. She is always posting high-quality videos that are skillfully edited and carefully curated. She remarks that it truly took time and practice for her to hone in on her short-form video skills. Vanessa also recommends trying to edit during the filming process by bouncing the files from her iPhone to Macbook in the moment.

6. Above all, protect yourself.

In the beginning, Vanessa used to sift through every single DM she would receive - which ultimately, could take hours to complete. She learned the hard way that this is incredibly draining and decided to forgo DMs almost completely. Instead, she focused her attention on making more content to protect her time, workload, and mental health.

7. Keep an archive.

Vanessa jokes that she can foresee herself experiencing burnout in the future. However, she is trying her best to combat this by keeping a backlog of all of her different ideas and transition ideas. This way, she can easily revisit this list and can revamp old, viral content to be fresh and new. She has unlocked the secrent to an endless supply of ideas to pull from.

8. Dream big.

As far as her future plans, Vanessa hopes to start her own clothing brand in the future. Now, she is just in the research stage but is hoping to form a company that is separate from her own personal brand. As of now, she feels like influencing will not be forever in terms of her career so the clothing brand would be a great transition as she builds her own empire.

From being 12 years old and taking photos of her outfits to reaching cross-channel influencer stardom, Vanessa is a forced to be reckoned with. We cannot wait to see what she has in store next.
