Social Strategy Planning 101

GUEST-STARRING KATIE STECKLY

Balance, perseverance, and love for what you do are the three elements necessary to be successful on any social media platform.

Katie Steckly is a jack of all trades when it comes to social media. Just name a platform and you can bet she is on it! She is active on everything from YouTube to Instagram, while also launching a Podcast every week, as well as managing a creative service business. Needless to say, she wears a lot of hats, which is why I wanted to sit down and discuss all things social strategy with her.

Believe it or not, Katie was definitely a leader of the pack since she delved into YouTube at around 12 years old! At such a young age, she was inspired by all the video creators that she religiously watched and knew she wanted to try it out for herself as a way to find a community and express her interest in the things she was passionate about. Fast forward years later, this has acted as the foundation of her successful career as a cross-platform content creator. Today, Katie is sharing her tips with us on how to plan your social strategy and manage so many different avenues while still saying sane.

1. Be persistent and good things will follow.

Many other content creators treat growth as they would a video game with the mentality that there is a cheat code to automatically excel you to the last level. In reality, one should focus more on creating high-quality content for real people. This is how you not only gain new followers, but also how you retain them to grow a community.

2. Stay consistent with your upload schedule.

Katie mentioned the quote, “if you want to hit homeruns, you just need to get up to bat more often”. For example, she was getting up to bat weekly by posting new videos on her channel for several years before her account took off. If you post content on a regular basis, this increases your chances of a homerun.

3. Provide value to your followers/listeners/viewers.

One of the most important aspects of being a content creator is to ensure you are providing intrinsic value so your audience is more likely to stay engaged. Katie’s podcast, The Creator Club, focuses on providing nuggets of info as soon as a listener presses play. Additionally, be sure to build up your library of valuable information so you can continue to be a go-to resource for your followers, listeners, and viewers.

4. Breaks are important for growth.

In 2021, Katie experienced a big burn out after dealing with external stressors such as all the challengers the pandemic brought. With that, she lost all her motivation to create content and even debated changing her niche or shutting down her business, so she decided to take a few months off. Just from taking a short break, she realized it was exactly what she needed to be rejuvenated and ready to jump back into all her social channels with a fresh perspective.

5. Remember to not put so much pressure on yourself.

Exponential growth is never linear and there will be periods of stagnant results. However, it is important to remember that this is all part of the natural ups and downs as a creator. Fluctuating engagement and growth is in no way a reflection of you or your abilities so it is important to keep pushing ahead!

6. Reach out for support.

Katie told us that one of the best things you can do as a creator is to speak to others who know exactly what you are going through. Reach out to creators and lean on them as a support system so you can coach each other through hard times and praise each other when you reach a goal.

7. Have a compassionate mindset.

Social media is very demanding, especially if you do choose to focus on cross-platforming. Be easy on yourself and do not feel the need to check off all the boxes on a daily basis. As soon as you decide to be on different social media accounts, you realistically cannot give 100% to each every single time. Personally, Katie loves organizing her various accounts on Notion because it is not platform specific and can look at all her different avenues in one place.

8. It’s okay to repurpose.

When you have so many different accounts that need your time and attention, there is a lot of pressure to offer different content across each. Katie reminds us that many of your followers on Instagram, might not necessarily consume your YouTube content on a regular basis so it is totally okay to repurpose content. Just meld and adjust your posts to match whatever platform you need to focus on and this will help you to realistically time manage all your social channels.

Katie provides awesome content and valuable information if you are a creator across all of the platforms in which she is active on. Get insider tips and tricks by tuning into her YouTube and Podcast.
